The 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix provided not only a historic result for the Silver Arrows but a chance to celebrate a relationship between team and partner that quite literally forms the lifeblood of the race-winning F1 W05.
“We head to Malaysia looking forward to an exciting week: not just at the circuit, but off track as well with PETRONAS” said Toto Wolff before race week. “This is the third time we have worked together to bring Formula One to the streets of Kuala Lumpur and it is a great opportunity to bring our Malaysian fans closer to their team.”
On the Sunday before the race itself, Lewis and Nico were on hand to bring Formula One to the masses as the star attractions in a city demonstration held on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Meeting the fans and giving passenger rides in the latest high-performance Mercedes-Benz road cars kicked off the week in style. But of course, the crescendo came as the pair lit up the rear wheels of the team’s W03 Formula One car along the narrow roads of KL, performing donuts for the delighted crowds.
“For PETRONAS, this is their race and therefore one of our home races and it’s a great opportunity to show the world what this partnership means” said Lewis, at the start of a busy week. “It was really cool to bring the car to Kuala Lumpur and put on a show for the fans.”
After a break on the Monday, Lewis and Nico were back in action. Staged at various locations in the vicinity of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, the pair were on hand to meet VIPs, employees, artists, competition winners and fans, speak at conferences and Q&A sessions, launch the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and soak up the Malaysian culture with activities ranging from shark swimming to trishaw rides.
Then, of course, the main event itself: the race weekend at Sepang. A fantastic weekend for the team could hardly have come in a more appropriate setting: as highlighted by a delighted Lewis on the podium: “This is my first win in Malaysia after eight attempts and to do it for our PETRONAS family in their home country makes it even more special.”
Championship leader Nico echoed the thoughts of his team-mate in front of a delighted home crowd, adding: “I want to thank our partners PETRONAS. They have given our team so much support, along with the best products for our power unit, so we are proud to be associated with them and I hope they enjoy the celebrations!”
