Lewis, yet another front row start – but was pole possible today?
It wasn't the easiest of qualifying sessions for me today but I'm still starting from second place and we can have a good fight from there tomorrow. I had a problem with the left front brake which was down on temperature and kept locking. Once you lose that confidence and rhythm under braking, it's very difficult. Nico did a great job this afternoon and at the end I couldn't get close to him so I'll have to try and make it up tomorrow in the race.
You were fastest in Q1, but from Q2 onwards it seemed to be a bit of a troubled session for you – tell us about that?
Yeah, absolutely. I really struggled with braking. When you look at the brake temperatures, the left front brake was always around 100 degrees less than the right front brake. It just kept catching. No matter what I did, even if I braked earlier and tried to save it, it would still lock. So that was perhaps where I was losing a lot of the time.
Is that an issue for you for the race – with a flat spot on that set of tyres as well?
Potentially, yeah. Maybe they can scrub them down or something and try to fix it overnight. The vibration isn’t that bad. It’s a minor flat spot. They’ll rebalance it and hopefully I won’t feel too much with it. The issue is just locking. If I can’t fix that left brake, then that will be a continuing issue throughout the race. And obviously flat spots lead to blistering so we’ve got try and make sure we can fix that this evening.
