On Sunday in Abu Dhabi, Lewis Hamilton was crowned the winner of the DHL Fastest Lap Award 2015. With the fastest lap at seven races prior to Sunday’s season finale, Lewis had already secured an unassailable lead ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, who ended the season with five fastest laps.
“I am delighted to have won the Fastest Lap Award again in 2015. It caps a phenomenal year for everyone in the Mercedes team. Winning the Drivers’ World Championship and the Constructors’ Title, and setting fastest lap eight times along the way – this all reflects the hard work and competitive spirit that define the team,” said Lewis.
The DHL Fastest Lap Award was established in 2007 to recognize the driver who most consistently demonstrates pure speed, with the fastest lap at the highest number of races each season. Since it was founded, the award has been won by five different drivers. Sebastian Vettel holds the record with three victories in the competition. Lewis is in joint second place alongside Finnish driver Kimi Räikkönen, with two awards apiece. Lewis recorded the fastest laps in 2015 in Australia, China, Spain, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
Each time he posted a fastest lap in a race during the 2015 season, Lewis started from the front row and finished in either first or second place. With a total of eight fastest race laps, he managed to further improve his performance from last season.
