After 64 hours of track time spread across eight days, pre-season testing is over for another year.
Valtteri: I hope we can extract the maximum from it straight from the word go in Melbourne
With thousands of laps of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya completed, it’s time to crunch the numbers ahead of the season opener in Melbourne – less than two weeks from now.
It was a busy fortnight for new Mercedes recruit Valtteri Bottas in Barcelona. The Finn completed a haul of 628 laps at the wheel of the F1 W08 EQ Power+. That’s 2,923km – almost 10 full Spanish Grand Prix race distances. It was the perfect dress rehearsal for the Finn, with no driver completing more mileage during the winter period.
“It's been so nice over these past two weeks to see how we operate as a group, both on and off the race track,” said Valtteri. “Thanks to everyone in Brackley and Brixworth for creating this beautiful package. I hope we can extract the maximum from it straight from the word go in Melbourne.”
Lewis: I'm happy with what we've gained knowledge-wise and feel confident
Lewis Hamilton added 468 laps of his own across the eight days to take the team's total testing mileage to 1,096 laps (5,102 km). That’s equivalent to over 16 race distances at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya!
These numbers are all the more impressive when considering the punishment the brand new Silver Arrow endured over that distance. Over 17,500 corners taken, 49,000 gear changes made, 70 sets of Pirelli tyres used, 43,840,000 injections of Petronas Primax fuel and 4,384 MJ of MGU-K energy deployed – truly mind boggling numbers.
“We've had our up and down days with the car, learnt a lot from that and made plenty of changes,” said Lewis. “I'm happy with what we've gained knowledge-wise and feel confident we got everything we needed from this test to go out and fight in Melbourne.”
Next stop, Melbourne, Australia
It was an impressive eight days of testing for the Mercedes-AMG F1 M08 EQ Power+ too. The 2017 Mercedes Power Unit completed 2,681 laps in Barcelona – a massive 12,480km of running between Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and customer teams Force India and Williams.
To underline the impressive work from the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains team in Brixworth, all three Mercedes-powered teams featured in the top five teams in terms of total mileage in Barcelona, completing the most laps of any of the four engine manufacturers.
Numbers crunched… next stop, Melbourne, Australia.
