Silver Arrows move within touching distance of 4,000km
Valtteri and Lewis clocked 149 laps between them
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s charge ended just 18 laps and 81 km shy of the 4,000km mark on Wednesday as the second pre-season test continued at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton clocked 149 laps between them to take the new W08’s running total for pre-season to 3,919 km – 842 laps and almost 13 full race distances of the Spanish Grand Prix.
Valtteri: It was another good half-day in the car for me
Valtteri kicked off the team’s programme in the morning, focusing on analysis of new aerodynamic parts and further set-up work for the early races, as well as data collection on the 2017 Pirelli tyres.
“It was another good half-day in the car for me,” said Valtteri. “We managed to complete our programme as planned and I have to say that I felt much better in the car today with the changes we’ve made.
“We’re definitely making good progress as a team and I’m feeling more and more comfortable in the car every time I go out on track.
Valtteri: Fastest laps don’t matter in testing
The new Mercedes recruit added 70 more laps to his testing tally and ended the day at the top of the timesheets – his 1:19.310 on the SuperSoft tyre the fastest lap of any driver in testing at Barcelona this year.
“Fastest laps don’t matter in testing,” said Valtteri. “What matters is where you are when you get to Melbourne. I’m just pleased we managed to complete the full programme. I learned so much from today’s running. Now I’m just concentrating on tomorrow.”
Lewis: It’s been a pretty good day, nice and smooth with no issues
Lewis was back behind the wheel of the beast after the lunch break and managed 79 laps - including a 20 lap run on the UltraSoft compound – as he continued the team’s preparations ahead of the trip to Oz.
“It’s been a pretty good day, nice and smooth with no issues,” said the three-time World Champion. “There is still a lot of work to be done but on the whole, it’s been another productive day for the team.
“F1 is always fun. The cars are always amazing. But this car… it’s faster and it’s more of a challenge to extract everything from it. I love that I get to do this.
Lewis: A big shout-out to everyone who came out to support us today
Lewis paid tribute to the team’s faithful fans that were camped out across from the Mercedes garage throughout the day.
He added: “It was really great to see the fans with their banners in the grandstand this afternoon, so a big shout-out to everyone who came out to support us today.”
The second pre-season test continues for a third day on Thursday, with Lewis driving in the morning and Valtteri in the afternoon.
