TEST REPORT: Closing on 1,000

Pre-season lap count nears 1,000 for the Silver Arrows after penultimate day of winter testing

Seven long days of testing

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas managed 147 laps between them on the penultimate day of pre-season testing at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, taking the W08’s total winter haul to 989 laps thus far – 4,604km.

Lewis was at the wheel of the W08 in the morning, focusing on set-up work for Melbourne as well as data collection with the 2017 Pirelli tyres – chalking up 52 laps before breaking for lunch.

After seven long days of testing - in which he has covered almost 2,000 km - the triple Formula One World Champion is itching to kick off the season proper, when the true pecking order of the F1 field should be revealed.

Lewis emerged for his first run as the track opened at 09:00

Today both drivers completed similar test programmes

Lewis: It’s great to feel it come together

“It was good to get some laps in this morning with slightly lower fuel,” said Lewis. “We worked on balance and made quite a few changes. I learned a lot about the car before handing over to Valtteri. We were trying to simulate something a bit more like qualifying and the car felt good on lower fuel. It’s great to feel it come together.

“I think Ferrari are bluffing and that they are a lot quicker than they are showing. They’re very close to us. It’s difficult right now to say exactly who is quicker. But they are very close, if not faster.

“Whatever the case, I can’t wait to go out and compete. Just a couple more weeks to go…”

Valtteri was back behind the wheel of the beast in the afternoon and clocked 95 laps as he continued the team’s preparations ahead of the season opener.

Valtteri: It was another strong day for me and the team

“It was another strong day for me and the team,” said the Finn. “I did some good mileage and some very interesting long run testing this afternoon on the different tyre compounds, as well as set-up work and evaluation of all the parts we’ve got for the car.

“We’re still finding out which of these parts are the best suited to our car and how exactly we can draw 100 per cent out of the package. Every day is still a massive learning curve for us and we’ve still got a lot of work to do to get it right.

“It’s going to be a tight competition in Melbourne so we need to make the most of our last day of testing tomorrow and maximise our mileage.”

Pre-season testing concludes on Friday, with Valtteri driving in the morning before handing over to Lewis in the afternoon.
