Today we hosted a beachside Q&A with Toto Wolff, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton fielding the questions. Below is a selection of the questions and the answers
Q. Lewis, you start the season as favourite going into the season; does this affect you at all?
Lewis: I try not to take any notice of the predictions before the season begins. It’s nice to have positive feedback and to feel encouraged ahead of the new season, but we just need to make sure we do everything we can to get to the top and stay there.
Q. Toto, in Malaysia last year you were running in 3rd and 4th position and asked both drivers to stay there. If you’re running in 1st and 2nd, will the same thing happen again?
Toto: We’re in the lucky situation that not only do we have two of the quickest drivers in Formula One, but also two intelligent drivers who have a fair and healthy relationship between them. We’ve had the conversation before and we’re all in agreement that the team comes first. Everyone is there to race each other but, as long as we respect the rules and each other within the team, we will be happy.
Q. You seemed to have the best running in testing with the least amount of problems and generally seemed the quickest car; is that how you feel?
Nico: We’re going into the season open minded; every season it’s the same with some teams doing well in testing then everything seems to change when you get to a race situation. We’ll see what happens over the course of the weekend.
Q. Lewis, you and Nico have a good friendship; if you are fighting for the championship do you see that changing at all?
Lewis: Me and Nico have been racing together since we were 13 and the first race we did together in Italy we were 1 and 2; we remained friends after that. We were also teammates in 2000/2001 and finished 1st and 2nd. We have also raced each other across other Formulas and remained friends. Naturally, Formula One is more intense and the competition is more fierce but we will always maintain that respect and friendship.
Nico: When you’re competing with each other there will always be differences and problems but wherever we’ve been and whatever has happened, we always manage to work it out.
Q. The Renault and Ferrari cars seemed to be further behind you at the moment; how real do you think that gap is?
Toto: We’ve seen some good running of some of the other teams and certainly within the last two weeks they will have been trying to examine and improve everything. However, if you look at the mileage for the Mercedes-Benz power units, we’ve done the most between the three suppliers which is a good sign. We’ll have to see how it goes this weekend but we’ve been pleased with the start.
