BLOG: Touchdown in Melbourne

This is it

This is it. After months of preparation we can finally say it again… it’s race week! The only thing left to do? Head to Melbourne and get the season started! But what’s it actually like travelling to the other side of the world?

It starts with a whirlwind of packing. Team kit… check! Laptop… check! Every possible charger and plug combination on the planet… check! Noise-cancelling Bose headphones to drown out those pesky kids on the flight… check! Passport and paddock pass… phew, check!

It starts with a whirlwind of packing

This time a monster 13 hour flight to Melbourne.

First stop, Abu Dhabi…

With the trusty Tumi case zipped up and ready to go, the journey to Oz starts with an early alarm and a rapid pick up from the factory. There’s just enough time to squeeze in a quick coffee before you bundle yourself onto a plane for the opening seven hour hop. First stop, Abu Dhabi…

One busy flight and a two hour turnaround later – or just enough time to catch up on all the football scores from back home, if you’re into that kind of thing – it’s back on a plane for the second leg – this time a monster 13 hour flight to Melbourne.

One of the coolest cities in the world

By this point, you’ve jumped more time zones than you can count. This is when the team’s sleeping guide comes in handy. Snooze for a few hours, squeeze in a movie, then take a second shot at getting your head down. Before you know it you’re touching down in the land down under (add that tune to the playlist, obviously!)

After 24 hours on the road / in the air, all your body will want to do is sleep. But this is F1 and the bright lights of Melbourne are calling – as well as your stomach! So, it’s back to the hotel, a quick change of clothes and off out to explore dinner options in one of the coolest cities in the world with your team-mates.

Albert Park is already a hive of activity

Feeling better for a good night’s sleep, it’s finally time to get down to work. Some of the team have already been here almost a week, setting up the garage, prepping the new (and seriously stylish!) hospitality suite and everything else you can imagine. Time to dig out the high-vis t-shirt and off to the track we go… those tweets aren’t going to write themselves, right?

On an overcast and breezy Wednesday morning, Albert Park is already a hive of activity. Everywhere you look, teams and track officials are putting the finishing touches to the trackside setup. Deep in the heart of the Mercedes garage, the mechanics are bolting the beasts together… almost ready for their moment to shine on track.

Back-to-School

That brilliant ‘back-to-school’ feeling ripples through the paddock. Look past the clash of different team colours and you’ll see plenty of smiles, as old friends catch up after a long winter break and new faces dash around bright-eyed in these surreal surroundings. This is your family for the next eight months. And you’re all in for one hell of a ride…

Excitement buzzes in the air. This is it. Tomorrow, F1 really is back.

And we can’t wait!
