The new Silver Arrow for the 2017 season not only has a new name – but also marks the beginning of a completely new range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles
What a beauty!
What a beauty! Journalists, guests and fans alike applaud as Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas unveil their new Silver Arrow on a breezy day at the Silverstone Circuit.
And once the ripples of noise subside and the new beasts’ features began to settle in, the question on the lips of many was this… what’s with the new name?
The answer, as it transpires, is a pretty exciting one. The F1 W08 EQ Power+ marks the worldwide debut of a new technology designation that will encompass all Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Benz models.
Mercedes-Benz Plug-In Hybrids
From the forthcoming facelift of the S-Class, all future Mercedes-Benz Plug-In Hybrids will carry the designation “EQ Power”. And the launch of the F1 W08 EQ Power+ makes the new F1 car the first Mercedes-AMG Hybrid to receive the “EQ Power+” designation, which will be used on all future Mercedes-AMG performance hybrids.
Translated graphically into the livery of the W08, with an electric blue visual representation of the airflow across the car running from the front wing to trailing edge of the sidepods, this distinctive signature derives from the electro-look of the Concept EQ unveiled last year.
EQ: The new brand for electric mobility
At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new product brand for electric mobility: EQ. The name EQ stands for “Electric Intelligence” and is derived from the Mercedes-Benz brand values of “Emotion and Intelligence”. EQ aims to make electric mobility simple, comfortable, safe and accessible for everybody.
The new brand encompasses all key aspects for customer-focused electric mobility and extends beyond the vehicle itself. EQ offers a comprehensive electric mobility ecosystem of products, services, technologies and innovations. The spectrum ranges from electric vehicles to wallboxes and charging services to home energy storage units.
The coming models embody the essentials of state-of-the-art electric mobility – the fusion of appealing design, exceptional driving pleasure, high everyday practicality and maximum safety typical of every vehicle manufactured by the inventor of the motor car.
The first series-produced EQ model will be launched in the SUV segment before the end of this decade. The EQ portfolio will encompass all future battery-electric cars as well as the associated products and services from Mercedes-Benz.
Concept EQ: Design with new electro-look
With “Concept EQ”, Mercedes-Benz shows how electric cars can soon move into the fast lane: The concept vehicle, with the appearance of a sporty SUV coupé, gives a preview of a new generation of vehicles with battery-electric drives.
The dynamic exterior design with its new electro-look underlines the focus on the powerful electric drive system: Two electric motors, with a system output that can be increased to up to 300 kW thanks to scalable battery components, and permanent all-wheel drive deliver the guarantee of dynamic high-level performance.
With a range of up to 500 kilometres and the typical Mercedes strengths of safety, comfort, functionality and connectivity, “Concept EQ” meets every demand in terms of contemporary, sustainable mobility. Also on the inside, the vehicle offers innovative solutions, including a completely new interior concept.
Mercedes-AMG GT Concept: Driving Performance of the future
‘Concept EQ’ is the first member of the EQ Power family and will be joined by many more in the future. Mercedes-AMG, for example, has already given an insight into alternative drive concepts with the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept show car developed for its 50th anniversary.
After the F1 W08 EQ Power+, the AMG GT Concept show car is the second AMG model to bear the new designation “EQ Power+”. The performance hybrid system combines a powerful 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine with an additional electric motor, ensuring extraordinary performance.
In line with the AMG brand pledge of “Driving Performance”, Mercedes-AMG is already developing segment-specific hybrids that not only promise incomparable power output but maximum efficiency too.
The future is coming fast… very fast…
And its name? EQ Power…
