F1 W09 EQ Power+

More than a machine

The F1 W09 EQ Power+ was improved in every area over its predecessor, becoming the fastest Mercedes Formula One car in history. As the most advanced machine ever conceived by Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, the 2018 car aimed to write its own chapter in that long racing heritage while also pushing technological boundaries.

Past success doesn’t impact the approach of the team’s two factories in Brackley and Brixworth. A new season meant it was back to zero, a level playing field and new targets in our eyes. Every team member knows that the points reset to zero for 2018 and that we faced an even greater challenge.

The outcome of roughly a millennium’s worth of working hours was W09, a car that was far more than just a machine. It was a demonstration of teamwork and represents the hopes and dreams of not just the drivers, the team, partners and the Daimler family, but also of Mercedes fans worldwide.

The first shakedown run of the car was watched with excitement not just by the team members at the track, in Brackley and Brixworth, but also colleagues and fans across the globe.

All-new car, similar DNA

The W09 shared some similar DNA to its predecessor, the W08 – which was affectionally dubbed a “diva” for being a little unpredictable at times.

However, W08 was the most successful car of that season, and W09 looked to be the same – and took the team to a remarkable, record-equalling fifth consecutive Championship double. The regulations remained largely stable for 2018, with the main differences being the introduction of the Halo, banning of the monkey seat and the high T-wings disappearing. The design philosophy remained the same, with the aim being to develop the many strengths of the previous car: W08.

While the team faced tougher competition from its closest rivals, W09 proved to be the class of the field come the season’s end, with Lewis Hamilton sailing to his fifth Drivers’ crown in Mexico and the team following that up with the Constructors’ victory in Brazil.

W09 claimed 11 wins, 13 pole positions, 25 podiums and 10 fastest laps from 21 races, as well as four 1-2 finishes. Combined, Lewis and Valtteri scored 655 points. In terms of mileage, the W09 managed 7,791 laps, covering 38,854km, 128,631 corners and 381,586 gear changes across the different chassis.
