Valtteri claimed P2 on the grid in Baku to complete the Silver Arrows second front-row lockout of the 2017 campaign. The Finn was gunning for his second Formula 1 pole and was quickest after the first bank of laps in Q3... but a 'sketchy' final lap cost him, handing pole to team-mate Lewis.
Valtteri: I struggled more with the tyres
"It's disappointing to be second when you're fighting for the pole," said Valtteri. "But everything was going well before the red flag. After that Lewis managed to get a lot more out of his set of tyres with a better temperature. I struggled more with the tyres.
"The gap was quite big. I locked up in turn 2 and went a bit deep in turn 7 and lost at least two or three tenths there. Towards the end of the day the sun comes down and that drops the track temperature in those places quite a lot. With the hard tyre compounds we have here it makes them even more difficult to get them to work."
Valtteri: This shows again that we have a really good car
After a tricky Friday, Valtteri was full of praise for the team on a mega turnaround that pushed the Silver Arrows back to the front of the field, leaving those Ferraris a second shy. For the Finn, it's another sign that once 'the diva' gets in the groove, it's a rapid race car.
"As a team we did a great job in terms of turning the car around. We made pretty big changes from yesterday to today. It was definitely the right direction. The balance wasn't there yesterday but once we got the balance right we could actually work the tyres and we made further changes after FP3. This shows again that we have a really good car. Once we get it right it's a winner.
