INSIGHT: Hat-Trick Hero Hamilton Hits New Highs

That’s why we go racing! Lewis Hamilton went wheel-to-wheel with Sebastian Vettel to clinch victory in an absolute thriller in Barcelona. And as if that weren’t exciting enough… we’re back with all the best facts and figures!

Going into Sunday’s race, the previous 10 Spanish Grands Prix had been won by 10 different drivers – but Lewis ripped up that form guide.

On lap 44, car 44 swept past Vettel for the lead. There was no catching the triple World Champion from there, as he claimed his second win at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya to become the first repeat winner at Barcelona in over a decade.

It was the second win of the season for Lewis and the 55th of his Formula One career – seeing him now firmly established in second on the all-time winners’ list.

But he didn’t just win. Lewis clocked the fastest lap – the 50th for the Silver Arrows in F1 – which, combined with his pole position from Saturday, sealed his second hat-trick of 2017.

It was the 12th of Lewis’ Formula One career and moves him above Jim Clark into second on the all-time list. He’s still got some way to go to match the great Michael Schumacher’s record 22 F1 hat-tricks, however.

Pole on Saturday took on extra meaning for Lewis too, as it marked the 250th P1 grid slot sealed by a British driver in Formula One history and the 64th of Lewis’ career.

One more pole for Lewis would mark the 65th of his F1 career, matching his idol Ayrton Senna in second on the all-time pole list and leaving him just three short of Michael Schumacher’s outright record of 68.

It was a great weekend for the two Mercedes Junior drivers, too. Esteban Ocon finishing a career-best P5 to extend his points scoring streak to five from five in 2017, while Pascal Wehrlein finished P8 to record his best F1 finish and claim Sauber’s first points of the year.
