Mark Ellis

Performance Director of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport

Mark studied Mechanical Engineering at Southampton University before joining Ricardo Consulting Engineers as a graduate Engine Development Engineer.

Mark’s motorsport career began in 1988, achieving success with numerous teams across various disciplines, in roles ranging from leading the development of Super Touring cars to WRC 4WD transmissions

Mark eventually moved to Formula One in 2000 with British American Racing as Head of Mechanical Design. What is Mark’s not so secret ritual before a Formula One race? “To eat copious amounts of chocolate; in fact, there doesn’t even have to be a race…”

A stint at Jaguar Racing followed in the role of Chief Race Engineer for the 2001 season, before returning to BAR in 2002 as Chief Test Engineer.

Mark moved on to Red Bull Racing in 2008 as Chief Engineer, Vehicle Performance, making a significant contribution to four consecutive double World Championships from 2010-2013.

He returned to Brackley in 2014, now under the Mercedes banner. Four years later, he remembers his first day with the team as follows: “I felt an overwhelming sense of well-being; this team had all the ingredients to become truly great.”

With Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Mark added four further back-to-back double World Championships to his already impressive tally, as the team claimed the titles in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. To this day, his favourite memory with the team is “the huge privilege of accepting the winning constructor’s trophy on the podium in Singapore, 2016 (especially after our performance there in 2015 had been pants).”
