The MGP W01 was the first Silver Arrow of the new era. It was the sixth model to have been built exclusively for a Mercedes-Benz works team and the first since the 1950s. Its immediate antecedent was the Mercedes-Benz W 196 R which saw service in the 1954 and 1955 seasons, winning two world championship titles with the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel.
The newly formed MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula 1 works team was unveiled at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart on 25th January 2010. The W01 went for its first outing during the winter tests in Valencia with a driver pairing of Nico Rosberg and record championship winner Michael Schumacher.
The first podium of the new era was claimed by Rosberg on the third weekend of the 2010 campaign in Malaysia, the home race for team sponsor PETRONAS. Two further Top Three finishes, both for Rosberg, were to follow in China and in the British Grand Prix which counts as the home race for the team itself.
In the 2010 comeback campaign for Mercedes-Benz, Rosberg and Schumacher in their MGP W01s made three podium appearances and scored 214 championship points. In the constructors’ championship, MERCEDES GP PETRONAS finished the season in fourth place.
