One lucky student from the SKIDZ Motor Project in High Wycombe spent a week at the factory in Brackley last month and was able to see first-hand what goes on behind the scenes at a top Formula One team. George first visited the factory in March when the new partnership between the team and the SKIDZ charity was launched and his enthusiasm led to the offer of a week’s placement by Ross Brawn.
After a tour around the different departments of the factory on his first morning, George was straight into the action and working on the race cars which had just returned from China. Working in the Car Build Department under the supervision of Peter Hodgkinson, Build Operations Manager, George was able to see for himself just how much work goes into getting the two cars ready to race.
George spent his week working with a team of 10 mechanics on tasks varying from dismantling, cleaning and preparing the cars. He also helped to spray the cars in the paint shop, melt the moulding and clean the screws… all rusty after quite a wet race in China! The highlight of the week was the chance to meet Nico in person when he popped into the factory for a visit to see his race engineers.
Peter Hodgkinson commented after George’s week with the team: “It was a pleasure to have George with us for a week and a great way to start our relationship with SKIDZ. As George has good mechanical ability, he was able to fit into our team environment straightaway and contribute positively to the team. Our mechanics enjoyed showing George the ropes and all of them became teachers and mentors for a week which was interesting to watch. Hopefully this experience will help George pursue his dream of becoming a Formula One mechanic and everyone here at MERCEDES GP PETRONAS wishes him all the best.”
