The Art of Fitness (Part I)

Part I: A typical day of training...

Fitness is a crucial factor when it comes to coping with the demanding job of being a Formula One driver. Constant travelling, media work, sponsor appearances, testing… without forgetting the actual racing of course! We decided to learn more about the importance of fitness to our drivers by talking to Nico’s physio Oliver Fengler...

Oli has worked with Nico since the start of his Formula One career in 2006 and is based at Dr Johannes Peil’s Sportklinik in Bad Nauheim, Germany. Oli shares his role as Nico’s physio with Daniel Schloesser and they split their attendance at races over the course of the season.

Performing well at the right time is one of the toughest challenges that a Formula One driver faces and to ensure that Nico is ready at the right times over a race weekend, Ollie focuses on three factors: “The key elements here would be fitness (as always!), body balance and mental fitness. If you are in a good frame of mind, you have a better chance of the body following as well.”

A typical day for Nico away from the track would be centered around his fitness programme. And the list of daily activities is quite impressive! Oli says: “We have quite a structured programme on our training days to ensure that we get the most of the time available. We usually start at 8.00 with breakfast to ensure Nico takes in enough calories for the start of the day’s activities. Around 9.30, we go for a two-hour bike ride which is Nico’s favourite way of working out. Then comes the lunch break around midday and in the afternoon, we spend two hours in the gym from 15.00. Dinner is at 18.00 and at 20.00 I will do a one-hour massage treatment to help his body recover.” Oli obviously has to be in good shape to follow the programme and keep up with Nico... “We have to train hard as well but it’s our job and it’s nice to be fit.”
