The story of AMG

AMG – the brand that stands for “Driving Performance” as typified by Mercedes-Benz. An uncompromisingly energetic driving experience is the main characteristic of cars developed by AMG. This orientation is determined not only by the unique driving dynamics, but also by extreme agility, an amazing sound and a very sporty design. For AMG, “driving performance” is also the claim to present ourselves as a driving force and innovator in the development of high-performance cars.

AMG is the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz. Since it was founded in 1967 in Affalterbach (near Stuttgart), Mercedes-AMG GmbH has been concerned with the development of racing and engine technologies. Numerous successes in motor sports and an excellent reputation among customers around the globe prove the outstanding competence of the AMG brand in these areas. With 165 victories in 342 races since 1988, as well as 32 driver, manufacturer and team titles, Mercedes AMG is the most successful brand in the history of the DTM. Since 1996, AMG has been represented continuously in the Formula 1 world, providing both the Formula 1 safety car and the Formula 1 medical car.

Mercedes-AMG GmbH has developed rapidly. Today, the development company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher is a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG and is firmly anchored in the development processes of Mercedes-Benz. This intensive integration, which starts as early as the design phase of new models, results in cars that ideally combine genes typical of Mercedes-Benz with the exclusive features of AMG. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which is probably the most prominent result, demonstrates the resounding success and the logical charisma of this partnership.
But anyone looking for something special will also find it at Mercedes-AMG. The Performance Studio in Affalterbach develops and produces individual AMG vehicles as well as exclusive small-scale series; an example of this is the nearly legendary super-sporty vehicles of the Black Series. The AMG performance brand, which was born in racing, is also at home on the race track – the SLS AMG GT3 has been available for racing customers since 2011.

More than 1000 employees currently work for Mercedes-AMG GmbH in Affalterbach. The pursuit of excellence connects them with their vehicles; but precision and respect are also part of the professional self-image at AMG, in keeping with the brand’s slogan: “Driving Performance”.
