• Andrea Kimi Antonelli

Andrea was born in Bologna, Italy, in 2006 and caught the racing bug from the tender age of nine. He was soon taking titles behind the wheel of a go-kart, having started competing in 2014.

In 2015, he claimed the championship in the Easykart Easy 60 class and backed that up with third place in the Trofeo Industrie 60 Mini category in the following season. After that, he quickly progressed to WSK Super Master Series 60 Mini in 2017, again placing third.

2018 proved to be a big season for Andrea, as he won the WSK Champions Cup 60 Mini category, driving for Energy Corse. He also competed in various other karting competitions, finishing second in the Italian Championship in the 60 Mini class, fifth in the WSK Final Cup and winning the 23° South Garda Winter Cup in the Mini ROK class.

He was officially announced as a member of our Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport junior team in April 2019, at the age of 12, but Toto Wolff, CEO and Team Principal, had been keeping a close eye on Andrea’s progress for some time.

Andrea stepped up to the OKJ class for the 2019 season, racing for the Rosberg Racing Academy, and won the WSK Euro Series in that class, alongside taking victory in the WSK Super Master Series, the 24° South Garda Winter Cup and claiming the runner-up spot on the FIA Karting European Championship (OKJ).

Other 2019 highlights include fifth in the FIA Karting World Championship (OKJ), fourth in the WSK Champions Cup (OK Junior), third in the Italian Championship (OKJ) and runner-up in the SKUSA SuperNationals XXIII (KA100 Junior).

In 2020, Andrea tackles a number of karting categories in the OK class, including the 25° South Garda Winter Cup, WSK Super Master Series and WSK Champions Cup. He’s also racing in the FIA Karting European and World Championships, also in the OK class.

On Andrea, Gwen Lagrue, Driver Development Advisor for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, said: “Kimi (his nickname) is a phenomenon. He’s racing for Kart Republic, Dino Chiesa’s team, who was previously taking care of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg about 20 years ago. We were really impressed with him – he’s very mature for his young age, is very patient and extremely clever. He’s fast, whatever the conditions are, and I’ve never seen him make a silly mistake. The love and passion for motorsport are obvious and he enjoys his racing, as I’ve never seen before. The way he is racing, overtaking, building his race weekend is very special and we are really looking forward to seeing him move into single-seaters.”
