Career

Paul was born in February 2004 in Estonia and first sat in a kart at the age of seven. He didn’t enjoy driving very much, to begin with, but once he started to achieve success he caught the racing bug and never looked back.

His brother Ralf is also a racing driver, recently competing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, and the competition between the two is high!

The teenager started his racing career in the Estonian Championship in 2011 and over the next two years, he competed in the Cadet and Micro classes. 2015 marked his step up to the WSK Final Cup and the WSK Super Master Series, both in the Mini 60 category, which he continued in 2016 – alongside claiming the Estonian Championship in the Mini 60 class. He was also awarded the best kart racer in Estonia.

The following season, Paul moved up to the OKJ class, competing in the 22° South Garda Winter Cup, WSK Final Cup and WSK Super Master Series. He also raced in the CIK-FIA European Championship in OK Junior. He remained in this series for 2018 and won the Championship with Ricky Flynn Motorsport.

During the season, he also finished P3 in the WSK Super Master Series (OKJ) and won the 23° South Garda Winter Cup (OKJ) and WSK Champions Cup (OKJ), proving to be a successful final season in karts before graduating to single-seaters.

His step up to single-seaters in 2019 yielded P3 in the championship in Italian Formula 4 and seventh in the Formula 4 ADAC category – racing for Prema Powerteam in both categories. For 2020, Paul moved up to Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with ART Grand Prix and also competed in various virtual races.

On Paul, Gwen Lagrue, Driver Development Advisor for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, said: “Paul is a very calm, intelligent and talented kid. After a brilliant career in go-karts, his debut in Formula 4 was really strong. What we liked to see the most was his progression during the season, how he was improving and reacting to difficulties. For a first year in single seaters, it was a very impressive campaign and that prompted his move up to Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 for 2020 with ART Grand Prix – a well-known team for us, having recently fielded Esteban Ocon and George Russell. Paul is still very young and has a lot to learn but he’s in a good environment and has the pace to fight for wins.”
