• NEWS: Lewis Waves Off Participants at Orchid Run & Ride 2018

Our four-time World Champion shows his support for the Orchid Run & Ride competitors with PETRONAS

Participants of the Orchid Run & Ride had a very special guest cheering them on and waving them off in 2018, with our very own Lewis Hamilton in attendance on Sunday.

The Orchid Run & Ride is an event organised by PETRONITA, the association for wives and female staff of PETRONAS.

It is led by Puan Sri Dr Azura Ahmad Tajuddin, President of PETRONITA and the wife of Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer.

It was initiated three years ago to promote healthy living in Malaysia and raise awareness and funds for charity and non-profit organisations.

The event itself is made up of a 12km run, 5km fun run and 5km fun ride and took place around the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

Lewis was there to show his support for the participants of the fourth Orchid Run & Ride, flagging off the three races, distributing water, meeting fans and beneficiaries of PETRONITA and handing out Orchids at the finish line.

"It's great to come back to Malaysia and help out in this year's Orchid Run & Ride; it's a fantastic event for a great cause," Lewis said.

"PETRONAS have supported me over many years, so coming to Kuala Lumpur and assisting with the event was not just a great opportunity to support a good cause, but also to give back to PETRONAS and thank them for their continuous support of myself and the team.

"Every time I visit our friends at PETRONAS, they always give me such a warm welcome. There were fans everywhere around the PETRONAS Towers, it was incredible."

It was a full house once again for the Orchid Run & Ride, with 7,000 people taking part across the three races and spectators lining the route to cheer on competitors.

There were two main categories to the event. Category A was made up of a 12km run for men and women aged 16 and over.

Meanwhile, Category B had two sub-categories, for the 5km fun run (for ages seven and up) and 5km fun ride (for ages 12 and up).

The beneficiaries of the event included Institut Telinga, Pendengaran dan Pertuturan (Institute-HEARS) by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Centre for Special Care Dentistry by the Faculty of Dentistry of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia and Home Equipment Loan Programme (HELP) by PPUMCARE (Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya).
