Countdown to Zero
Our ambition to be carbon neutral in 2020 with a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2022
Daimler AG Ambition2039
May 2019
Our parent company Daimler AG announced Ambition2039 which outlines the company's path to sustainable mobility, including the goal to offer a CO2-neutral new passenger car fleet in 20 years.
March 2020
Mercedes-Benz announced a sustainable business strategy for its motorsport activities
Mercedes-Benz uses Formula One and Formula E to pioneer innovation for both race cars and road cars and to showcase cutting-edge technology to hundreds of millions of people around the world
Driven by innovation, efficiency and new technologies, the strategy includes major commitments to significantly reduce carbon emissions of the works teams in Formula One and Formula E.
Mercedes-Benz also has a desire to drive the change within Formula One for more sustainable racing, taking a leading role in the FIA working group for sustainable fuels and pushing to increase the level of renewable fuels as well as the percentage of electric power in the F1 hybrid power units in future regulations.
What are we doing?
As a team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas aims to reduce our CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2022, compared to the baseline set in 2018.
This would see a drop from around 20,000 tonnes in 2018 to 10,000 tonnes in 2022.
How will we achieve this?
- Reduced emissions through the transition to renewably sourced energy at our factories
Our high-tech chassis factory in Brackley already uses renewably sourced energy to power all its operations, which include facilities like the wind tunnel, data centre, digital simulation environment and test benches.
Our Brixworth technology centre, where Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) develops and manufactures the powertrains for Formula 1 and Formula E, produces more than half of its electricity using solar panels and an on-site CCHP plant.
For all externally sourced energy, HPP has committed to switch to renewable power sources in the course of 2020.

- Offsetting unavoidable CO2 emissions
The very nature of Formula One as a motorsport series that races around the world means that there are certain unavoidable CO2 emissions, which we will offset through gold-standard off-setting.
- At the race track
Our commitments also extend to how we operate at the racetracks, for example single-use plastics will be eliminated from our catering operations, and low-impact hotel stays will be adopted for every team member.
With these measures, we are aiming to be carbon neutral by the end of 2020.
Toto Wolff
"The entire automotive industry is in the middle of a massive change and Daimler very much leads the way in taking responsibility for sustainable mobility. We represent the three-pointed star on the racetrack, and we want our motorsport platforms to be a case study for the rapid and open-minded implementation of innovations for a more sustainable future. That goes from the hybrid and battery electric technology in our race cars, to our daily business practice at the racetrack and in our production facilities."

Markus Schaefer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development
"We take a holistic approach to sustainability at Daimler - we take responsibility for the economic, ecological and social effects of our business activities. It's our ambition to lead the way to carbon neutral and sustainable mobility. F1 is one of the toughest technical competitions in the world and success can only be achieved by pushing technological boundaries every day. Our F1 team will achieve a net-zero carbon footprint in 2020 and we actively encourage F1 to take more ambitious steps towards CO2 neutrality for the entire sport and to race towards a sustainable future. With the direction announced today, we want to make sure that Formula One and Formula E enhance their positive impact for our brand going forward."
