Born in Miami, Florida, but a native of Jamaica, Alex was born in 2007 and made his karting debut in 2015. With the dream of becoming a professional racing driver, he has already made quite a name for himself on the karting scene over the last few years.
Racing is in his family’s blood. His father John is a veteran rally driver who found success in the Caribbean, while his cousin is the former world’s fastest man – sprinter Asafa Powell.
His first taste of karting competition was in the Barbados Regional Championships in 2015, before he then headed outside of the Caribbean to gain further experience. He finished 3rd in the Florida Winter Tour in the Micro ROK category in 2016, also winning the Epcot Challenge that year too. He competed in the SKUSA Summer Nationals and the ROK Cup USA, too, finishing 2nd in the National Championship in the latter.
2017 proved a busy year for Alex, competing in a vast range of karting Championships. He claimed P3 in the Florida Winter Tour, won the Midwest ROK Cup and the Epcot Challenge and was Champion in the ROK Winter Cup – to run through a few of the highlights.
Last year he stepped up to competing in Europe, claiming the title in the WSK Final Cup in the 60 Mini class. He also claimed P3 in the SKUSA SuperNationals XXII in the Mini Swift class and P3 in the Florida Winter Tour, this time racing in the Mini ROK category.
He was officially announced as a member of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport junior team in April 2019.
Alex enjoyed a successful 2019 campaign, driving for Energy Corse, which included winning the ROK Cup Superfinal (Mini ROK) and 24° South Garda Winter Cup (Mini ROK), finishing third in the WSK Super Master Series (60 Mini), third in the Italian Championship (60 Mini), fifth in WSK Euro Series (60 Mini) and ninth in the WSK Champions Cup (60 Mini).
2020 has seen Alex taken on various OK Junior categories in the karting world, including the WSK Champions Cup and WSK Super Master Series. He is also competing in the FIA Karting European and World Championships this year, also in OK Junior.
On Alex, Gwen Lagrue, Driver Development Advisor for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, said: “Alex’s nickname in the go-kart paddock is ‘The Jamaican Rocket’ and I agree. He is our youngest junior driver and since 2018, he’s headed over from the other side of the Atlantic to race in Europe. Racing in the Mini category, he was discovering a new team, new tracks and new competitors, but after only a few weeks he was already fighting at the front with our other junior driver, Andrea Kimi Antonelli – who is one year older than Alex. That really impressed us, so we decided to give him a chance and after a superb 2019 season in Mini, he’s now racing in OK Junior in 2020 and is already in a position to fight for wins.”
