Join the Composite Manufacturing Department as we take on the challenge of Formula One’s exciting new era of sustainable technical regulations.

By spending your year in industry with us, you will:

As an Industrial Placement in Composite Manufacturing:

In this role you will find yourself creating the manufacturing methods for some of the most complex carbon fibre structures such as the chassis, suspension, wings and engine components. Utilising CATIA 3D Experience you will collaborate with design to turn their parts and drawings into the individual plies and kits our highly skilled laminators require to build these components. Implementing our detailed training programme to produce laser projections for accurate ply placement and designing tooling to improve part quality. You will take an active role in root cause investigations to ensure we are able to get parts to the track in the quickest possible time and at the lowest cost without compromising quality or performance. Applying the knowledge acquired within your degree to help us develop new technologies faster than anyone else on the grid.

We are a small department with a lot of ambition and as a placement student you will quickly enjoy the same freedom and responsibilities as a full-time employee; actively contributing to and, in time, leading your own components. You will be coached and supported by a team of experienced engineers, ensuring you learn our processes and methodologies as quickly as possible helping you to grow as an engineer along the way.

Successful candidates will:

  • Have a strong background in an engineering discipline that provides the foundations for a manufacturing engineer.

  • Have a prior interest in motorsport is not required; we are more interested in your potential to apply your academic skills and understanding to practical manufacturing challenges. Whatever your background, we believe that you will find your time with us a memorable and enriching experience

  • Have at least one year remaining on your current course or be enrolled on your next course* from the point at which you start your placement with us (Please note that if you will be enrolled on a Masters or PhD course you will need to be able to evidence enrolment to confirm eligibility)

  • Have a strong interest in manufacturing processes and problem solving

  • Have an open and honest communication style

  • Take full ownership of their work, driving projects forward with initiative and independence

  • Be adaptable, have a proactive mindset, a collaborative approach and thrive in a team environment

  • Show determination and resilience when facing challenges

  • Have keen attention to detail

  • Possess an analytical and inquisitive approach

  • Relish challenges and enjoy pushing for continuous improvement

Skills you will gain from your placement include:

  • A deep understanding of the composite manufacturing process, its advantages, limitations, and future potential

  • Learning the tools required to improved quality, lead time and cost within a production line

  • Become a skilled CAD user in CATIA 3D Experience. Creating surfaces, parts, generating plybooks and learning the composites modules

  • Interpretation and understanding of technical drawings, specifications, and product control documentation

  • Hands on experience in working with composite manufacture

  • An understanding of how all areas of an F1 car are manufactured and the strategies employed to overcome the hurdles presented by parts designed for performance and not manufacture

  • Project and time management techniques to maximise your own efficiency
