• NEWS: Valtteri Hits the Ice with MK Lightning

Valtteri Bottas changed up his exercise regime earlier this week with a trip to Milton Keynes, to train with the MK Lightning ice hockey team.

Valtteri enjoyed the training session very much

Thursday's visit to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport factory was a little bit different for Valtteri, as it featured an outing to train with MK Lightning.

The Finn was put through his paces by Head Coach Pete Russell, ahead of MK Lightning's EIHL game against reigning champions Cardiff Devils.

Valtteri joined the team for drills and practice plays, quickly settling into the training session - having played junior ice hockey for over a decade until the age of 15.

He spent time as a forward, defenceman and a netminder, before giving it up to focus on his racing. So, he's no stranger to the ice.

Having got properly kitted up, Valtteri headed onto the ice to take part in some warm-up drills, before getting stuck into some match scenarios.

It was good fun. I always enjoy it on the ice. Valtteri Bottas

'It was a real pleasure having Valtteri along to join us in training'

He enjoyed the training session so much, he asked if he could stay a bit longer!

"It was a real pleasure having Valtteri along to join us in training," said Coach Russell.  "We could see straight away he's a natural and was very comfortable on the ice.

"He covers the ice well and reads the game plays excellently. We'd have been interested in signing him for the rest of the season, but apparently a team in Brackley's got first call on him!"

It's not the first time Valtteri has joined a training session with professional ice hockey athletes, last summer he took part in a session with the NHL's Montreal Canadiens ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

"It was fun," Valtteri said afterwards. "They are proper players, really good. It was good fun. I always enjoy it on the ice."
