George at 150 Grands Prix:
His Best Moments So Far

Gutsy drives. Epic pole laps. Dominant wins.

George’s first 149 Grands Prix have been full of magic, expertly taking the car beneath him to its limit to maximise performance and the final result.

When the lights go out in Las Vegas this weekend, George will become the latest driver in F1 history to start 150 races.

Below are some of our favourite George moments from his career so far.

Sakhir 2020 - So Near Yet So Far

George’s Mercedes debut had it all.

It started with a late call-up to replace Lewis on the Wednesday before the race and ended with the 22-year-old slumped on a grassy verge in the paddock in Bahrain.

While the P9 finish at the 2020 Sakhir GP did confirm George’s first points in F1, it could have been so much more. A puncture and a mix up at his mandatory pit stop prevented George from claiming a famous win in Sakhir, after a dream start had seen him jump into the lead from the front row in W11.

Nevertheless, the watching world had sat up and taken notice. It wasn’t a race victory, but there was no doubt that greater things were ahead.

What George said: “We had the win in the bag, I felt great in the car. It was taken away from us once, we came back through, and it was taken away from us again.”

Hungary 2021 - Points with Williams

George arrived in Budapest still waiting for his first points with Williams, with whom he had made his F1 debut 48 races previously.

In a chaotic race dictated by an early first lap crash, George did what he did best, kept his head down, got on with the task at hand, and crossed the line P8.

The emotional images of George in tears in the paddock post-race told you just what this one meant to both him and Williams.

What George said: “I’m so happy, for myself and for the team. That final stint – fending off from Danny Ric and Max – was probably the best of my career.”

Belgium 2021 - A Front Row Podium

Sunday may have been the race that never was at Spa, but George’s first F1 podium was earned by a truly spectacular qualifying lap in atrocious conditions on Saturday.

Williams’ first front row start in over four years was made more impressive by the fact the team had been the slowest on the grid for the previous two seasons and that George split the two title protagonists in 2021, Lewis and Max Verstappen.

Once again, a statement had been made.

What George said: “We don’t often get rewarded for great qualifyings, but we absolutely did today. My whole team deserves it as there has been so much hard work going into it over the last few years.”

Australia 2022 - Silverware with the Silver Arrows

George’s full-season debut with Mercedes had started with a strong P4 in Bahrain and P5 in Saudi Arabia in W13.

It got even better Down Under, as the 24-year-old claimed his first podium with the three-pointed star, a P3 finish in Melbourne.

He became the first driver to score a podium for the Silver Arrows after graduating the team’s junior programme (not the first time he would achieve a first in this category in 2022) and the result formed the foundation of a brilliant run of consistency that would see George finish in the top five in the first nine races of the campaign.

What George said: “I think it's credit to the team back at Brackley and Brixworth. This weekend we were the fifth fastest team, but you've got to be there at the end if you want to pick up the points, and that's what we've done.”

Hungary 2022 – A Maiden F1 Pole

George had earned the nickname ‘Mr Saturday’ during his time at Williams, often reaching Q2 and even Q3 against the odds with inferior machinery.

That tag took on even more relevance at Budapest in 2022 when he secured his first F1 pole with a stunning lap around the Hungaroring.

There had been podiums and efficiency up to that point in the year, but this was another step on the ladder as George and W13 came alive when it mattered most on Saturday afternoon, to clinch the team’s first pole position of the new era.

What George said: “I’m over the moon and absolutely buzzing. For us as a team it’s massive. We felt pretty lost yesterday, so to come back and grab pole position 24 hours later, it's just such a good feeling.”

Sao Paulo 2022 – ‘George Russell, You Are a Grand Prix Race Winner!’

The words George would have wanted to hear since he first stepped into a go-kart.

As he returned to the pits having crossed the line first at Interlagos in 2022, he was celebratory but determined: ‘This is just the beginning, guys!’

It came at the end of a near faultless weekend that had seen George take the Sprint race win on the Saturday from P3 on the grid and then control the Grand Prix from the front on the Sunday.

What George said: “I'm speechless. On the in-lap all these memories came flooding back. All the support I have had and everyone who gave me the opportunity to get on the programme with Mercedes, the list is endless. I cannot thank them enough.”

Silverstone 2024 - On Pole at Home

What’s better than a Grand Prix pole position? A Grand Prix pole position at home.

It had been two years since George’s first pole position in Hungary in 2022, and in that time, he had added one more (Canada 2024) to his tally.

His third Saturday P1 came in front of a raucous home crowd and secured a record-breaking 84th Mercedes front-row lockout with Lewis just behind in the second W15.

What George said: “Come on! What a feeling, what a feeling. At the start of this year, I don’t think we could have even dreamt of being on pole here. This is just mega.”

Las Vegas 2024 – Dazzling Under the Lights

Top three in every Free Practice, pole position, race win, and all but one lap led.

Few could get near George all weekend under the lights in Las Vegas, and his third Grand Prix win was comfortably his most dominant yet.

After losing his Belgium win post-race earlier in the summer, there was no question who was taking the trophy home this time around.

What George said: “It’s been a dream of a weekend. To get a victory here, pole position, dominant weekend, 1-2 with Lewis as well, we couldn’t have chosen a better place to make this happen.”

Canada 2025 – Hat-Trick Hero

Fifty drivers in F1 history have recorded a Grand Prix hat-trick – pole position, fastest lap, and the race win. After Canada in 2025, George is one of them.

A year on from taking pole position in Montreal and finishing P3, George went two better on Sunday in 2025.

Many had said it was already George’s strongest season, all it needed was a race win. It now had it.

With the team watching on down below the podium, George was able to share this success with new team-mate Kimi.

What George Said: “I felt last year was a victory lost. And then obviously we got the victory today probably due to the incredible pole yesterday. And obviously, so happy to see Kimi on the podium as well. So amazing day for the team.”

Singapore 2025 - Redemption

Two years earlier, George left Marina Bay devastated after a last lap crash cost him P3.

He was the class of the field in 2025, a victory that was built on two epic laps in Q3 – both of which were good enough for pole.

On race day, he got to Turn 1 first and never looked back, securing his second win of the season in the brutal conditions round the Singapore streets.

What George said: “I'm a very different driver today to the one I was a couple of years ago. I feel more complete, more confident. I've said it for a while — I feel ready to fight for a championship. I feel ready to take it to my next step.”
