‘I Can’t Put Together What Has Been Achieved’ – Hywel Reflects on the 2014-2025 F1 Hybrid Era

“Hard work, brilliant people, and incredible engineers.”

Those are what comes to mind when Hywel Thomas, Managing Director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains is asked to think about the past 12 seasons of Formula 1.

Right now, Hywel is preparing to enter F1’s latest era of racing at the forefront of our ambitions for 2026 and beyond.

When the lights went out in Melbourne 11 years ago, Hywel was trackside at Albert Park as Engineering Director in Brixworth.

No-one could have predicted what was about to unfold for the Three-pointed Star.

“I remember a lot of the early days, when we first brought the Power Unit [PU] to the track, and not knowing if we had a good product, or any performance,” Hywel says.

It was only when the chequered flag fell on qualifying in Australia that everything started to take shape, and years of dedication and a relentless pursuit of perfection looked to have borne fruit.

“I looked up at the timing sheets as the cars came back in and thought ‘we’ve got a great product.’”

Eight Drivers’ titles, 10 Constructors’ titles and 229 Grand Prix wins later, Hywel finds it difficult to put into words the past 12 seasons.

“It's just incredible – I can’t put together in my mind what's been achieved,” he says.

“I know the hard work, I know the brilliant people, I know the amazing engineers and all the team members.

“They are so good at what they do and put everything into it. They deserve it, but even so it's quite incredible to see what's actually happened in that period of time.”

“It was over a decade of our lives. The PU has been a great product, but it has taken an awful lot of looking after.

“We don’t just put them together at the start of the year and leave them.

“It has been the continual evolution of the powertrain that I’ll remember, and the continued looking after it to make sure we don’t get a nasty surprise.”

And the team was not immune from those nasty surprises.

It may have looked plain sailing on track for so long, but behind the scenes challenges were never too far away.

“There was always something to catch us out,” says Hywel.

“Something was always bubbling beneath the surface.

“But whenever we do face hurdles, we know how to react, we know what to do and we work really hard to get on top of them. That’s the main thing.

“We have always understood that the unexpected is out there, it’s about reacting to that when the unpleasantness happens.”

Car designs, engines, and on-track performance have all changed over the last decade and a bit, but one thing has remained constant: PETRONAS.

Our Title and Technical Partner have played a vital role in our Power Unit progression over the years, and that is something that will remain going forward.

“The work PETRONAS have done in this era has been really, really key. Fuel is obviously such an integral part of any combustion engine,” says Hywel.

“Without them, we would not have been able to have the performance we have.

“Looking forward, the 2026 project they are doing for the new regulations and the sustainable fuel, is truly phenomenal. It is so important to the way we go racing next year.”

Ah, next year.

A new dawn for our sport, Mercedes, and Hywel to adjust to.

While being no guarantee of future success, the learnings of the past are undoubtedly helping to shape our present-day approach to F1 2026.

“There are plenty of engineering points that we have taken forward, and there is plenty of knowledge of how to put together a V6, and of the materials required to do it,” says Hywel.

“We have lots of information and lots of ways of working we can use – and we know how to look after a Power Unit through a season. We certainly know how to put together a pool of engines at the start of the year.

“All of these things are really fantastic to take into a new era.”
