Since 2022, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been the Official FIA F1 Safety Car, and the Mercedes- AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ the Official FIA F1® Medical Car.
Both vehicles are also currently in use and perform their duties not only in Formula 1, but also in Formula 2, Formula 3 and other junior and support racing series.
Between races, maintenance of the vehicles is carried out by Mercedes-AMG, with technical support also provided by a team from Affalterbach.
It’s a special year for Mercedes and the F1 Safety Car, a relationship which will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, having first been deployed at the 1996 French Grand Prix, on June 30.
In Austin last year, Mercedes celebrated its 500th race as the official F1 Safety Car provider.
To date, a total of 13 different models were used as Safety Cars and eight different models as Medical Cars.
There will be another Mercedes Safety Car milestone to celebrate when we arrive in Melbourne in March, as the mercurial Bernd Mayländer will reach 500 Grands Prix as the official F1 Safety Car driver, having first got behind the wheel in 2000.
