Toto In His Own Words: What Gives Him the Most Cause For Optimism

As we get ready to tackle the last portion of the season, Toto reflects on the year so far.

The F1 season finishes with five races in six weeks. It will be full of action, with iconic races and the sport’s return to Las Vegas. We’re all excited to see what it holds.

This year has not been an easy one. But as Niki used to say: “Winning is one thing – but out of losing I always learned more.” That sums up how I feel about 2023. We have been forced to take a long look in the mirror, and the challenges will make us stronger.

The evidence is clear already. If you contrast where we were in Bahrain, to where we are now, it is a big difference. It was clear in that very first race that we had fallen far short of where we needed to be. From that point, it’s been a constant development process. We’ve made strides in performance and better understood the inherent limitations of the W14.

The progress has been solid. The W14 is more consistent – though never easy for Lewis and George to drive. We have swung from sometimes fighting for podiums and even the win in Singapore, to other weekends having to limit the damage with a handful of points. We haven’t maximised all our opportunities this year. Yet we are second in the Constructors’ Championship. We have a healthy gap over Ferrari in P3. If you had told the team back in Bahrain that we would be in this position, I don’t think many would have believed you. That is testament to the hard work of everyone at Brackley and Brixworth.

The reflections on our knowledge gaps, the effort to not only close those gaps but make them into strengths, and the motivation that is flowing through the corridors. It is an incredibly exciting time as we push full steam ahead for 2024 and W15. The gap to the front is large. We know that even with a fair wind behind us, it is a mountain to climb. We’re focused on doing so though, taking it step-by-step. It is a challenge we are relishing.

Turning back to these final five races, the goal is clear. Secure P2 in the Constructors’ and establish the best possible position for 2024. For Austin, we will be bringing a modified floor. It is the last significant update we will take to the track this year. We don’t expect it to bring a huge amount of lap time, but it is another milestone in confirming our development path for W15.

We then head to Mexico before returning to Brazil, site of so many of Lewis’s great races and George’s first F1 victory. After that – Las Vegas. It is sure to be an incredible spectacle. Racing down the famous Strip on a Saturday night will be iconic. Finally, we close out the season in Abu Dhabi and will look to achieve our objective in the overall standings.

Plenty to look forward to then. I hope our fans enjoy this run of races and I want to thank them for their support across the year, through good times and bad. Rest assured that every member of the team is working as hard as possible to give you more to cheer in 2024.

Speak to you all again soon,

Toto

P2 in the Constructors’ is never our aim. We have made progress from a difficult start, but it is the work that I have seen at the factory that makes me cautiously optimistic.
