Every year the Austrian Grand Prix rolls into Spielberg, Julia Eva Hetyey has one of the best seats in the house.

With over a decade in marshalling, Julia – based in Vienna - is not only a huge motor racing fan but is a highly-respected marshal.

Having watched her first Grand Prix in 1994 as a child, she was instantly fascinated by the speed and beauty of the cars – a moment sparked a lifelong passion.

Returning to the Red Bull Ring this weekend, Julia tells us about the stunning scenery, the must-dos whilst you’re there and the excellent and inspiring job the marshals do for our sport everywhere we go.

“I’ll Never Forget the Thrill of the Final Corner”

Julia started as a Formula 1 marshal at the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix – a race dominated by Mercedes with Lewis locking in pole, the fastest lap, and the victory for the Silver Arrows.

It was a life-changing experience and would lead to Julia marshaling at races all around the world.

“As a marshal, we’re the closest people to the action - literally trackside,” she says.

“Once I’m on post, I’m right at the heart of it all. It’s an incredible perspective and a big part of what makes the role so rewarding.

“My first event at the Red Bull Ring was in 2016. I was a flag marshal stationed at the final corner, a spot I’ll never forget.

“Watching the cars fly through that turn at incredible speed before launching down the main straight was absolutely thrilling. It was the perfect introduction to the world of marshalling at the highest level.”

Stunning Styrian Scenery

Located in the mountains, the Austrian Grand Prix is unique for its backdrop.

The swooping hills look more like a backdrop for the Sound of Music rather than a motor race and is adored by fans and drivers alike. Its location also makes it an easy target for unpredictable weather conditions, as Julia explains.

“Mornings can be freezing - I've even seen snow on track in April. Over my 10 years of marshaling here, I’ve experienced everything from heatwaves and hail to snow and dense fog.

“The scenery around the Red Bull Ring is breathtaking. Nestled in the Styrian mountains, the track offers a unique atmosphere that adds so much to the racing experience.

“During breaks, I often find myself just staring at the mountains – it is peaceful, majestic, and unlike any other circuit I’ve worked at. The natural beauty truly makes this venue special.”

It certainly makes for a picturesque racing backdrop, and is a big reason as to why Julia thinks it’s such a loved stop on the calendar:

“It’s the combination of high-speed racing and stunning scenery. The Styrian mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop, and the Red Bull Ring always delivers thrilling action. It’s an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”

“One Of the Most Exciting Place to Be”

Having worked as a marshal at several locations around the circuit, Julia is in the perfect position to judge the best spots to watch the action from. Her personal favourite is Turn 3.

“It’s the highest point on the track and still uphill, which adds to the challenge, and the view from there down into the valley is absolutely amazing,” she says.

“It’s a brilliant overtaking zone after a long straight, with heavy braking and plenty of action.

“From a marshal’s perspective, it’s one of the most exciting places to be. There’s also a grandstand nearby, so the energy from the fans adds to the atmosphere.

“During the 2024 Formula 1 weekend, I had the opportunity to work at an all-female post at Turn 3, on the driver's right.

“It was an incredibly well-coordinated and supportive team, and the experience stands out as the highlight of my season.”

Three Things ALL Fans Should Do

Being in the middle of the mountains might sound like a logistical nightmare, but Julia happily uses public transport to get herself from her home in Vienna to the heart of Styria.

“I usually take the train, which is convenient and reliable. I recommend fans do the same - ÖBB, the Austrian Railways runs additional trains during the Grand Prix weekend, making it easy to reach the circuit without the stress of traffic or parking!”

Austria is also known for its cuisine, and the famous Wiener Schnitzel.

It’s a must-eat for all F1 fans over the Austrian GP weekend, with Julia describing it as “crispy, golden, and iconic”!

If you are looking for the perfect accompaniment to wash it down with, why not try a “refreshing local drink, Almdudler, Austria’s beloved herbal lemonade.”

Fantastic Facilities

After going to her first F1 event at the venue in 2016, Julia has always been amazed “at how modern and well-equipped” the venue is.

“After its major renovation in 2010, it reopened in 2011 with top-tier facilities - not just for teams and fans, but also for us marshals. I’ve worked at circuits around the world, and the Red Bull Ring remains one of the most advanced and marshal-friendly tracks out there. That high standard hasn’t changed.”

As a marshal, Julia says her 10-year journey has brought ‘immense personal and professional rewards, and everyone at the track this weekend can be so thankful for the work she and everyone else does week in and week out for our sport.

“I’ve had the chance to work alongside passionate people from all over the world and witness unforgettable racing moments up close,” she explains.

“What makes it truly special is the sense of community - we marshals are like one big family. We support each other, share the highs and lows, and take pride in playing a vital role in motorsport. Every event brings new challenges, but also new memories that make it all worth it.”
