The most recent new entry to the Formula One winners’ circle – George Russell. The 25-year-old has lived and breathed motorsport from his very earliest years. With an older brother who was a national karting champion in his own right, the racetrack has always been his natural home. The path to F1, his journey. Now arrived as a Grand Prix victor, the Brit is one of the most exciting talents in the sport.

Two seasons in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship followed before George’s big break came. At the start of 2017, the then teenager became a member of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s Junior Programme. It would prove to be a breakout year for George as he stormed to the GP3 Series title whilst also completing F1 testing with Mercedes and driving in two FP1 sessions for Force India.

His debut season in F1 was spent mostly fighting at the back of the field in struggling machinery. George was still able to produce some impressive performances and remained with Williams for 2020. Those first points remained elusive in his sophomore year until, nearing the end of the season, he was called up to replace an ill Lewis Hamilton for the Sakhir Grand Prix. A sterling performance over the entire race weekend could have seen George take his maiden F1 victory but for a pit stop issue and then a puncture. He did however come home in ninth place and scored fastest lap, to earn his first points.

Retained for a third year by Williams, there were several starring drives including a stunning lap to secure second on the grid in Belgium. That ultimately led to his promotion to the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team for 2021. In his maiden season with the Team, he took his maiden pole position in Hungary and then his first Grand Prix victory with a controlled drive in Brazil to win the São Paulo Grand Prix.

As a team, we have been building momentum and we’re excited to see how that has progressed. I feel in a really strong place; mentally, I feel the strongest I’ve ever been. I am ready for the year ahead.
