Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team driver Kimi Antonelli and reserve driver Valtteri Bottas went head-to-head in an exhilarating race across the desert, with only SAP’s AI co-pilot Joule, F1 commentator David Croft and a limited budget to help them reach the finish line.

Activation Overview

Kimi and Valtteri went head-to-head in a high-octane race across the desert, with the finish line floating hundreds of feet above the ground: an SAP-branded hot air balloon.

Their mission was simple — reach the balloon first.

But there was a twist. With only a $135 travel budget — a playful nod to F1’s $135m cost cap — they needed to make it to the finish line without blowing their budget.

With SAP’s AI co-pilot Joule, to help them, they faced multiple checkpoints and a variety of transport options, each with its own cost. From camel rides and dune buggies to sailboats and public transport, Kimi and Valtteri had to navigate their way across sand, sea, and city streets, all the way to the balloon rising above Manama.

A humorous spin on the F1 Cost Cap challenge.
